“PLACES OF POWER / LOCAL LANDMARKS II”
By
Gregory A. Hughey
“Places of Power / Local Landmarks II” is the second in a series of photographic visions of natural landmarks found in the Yampa and Elk River drainages of Routt County, Colorado. This second yearlong study depicts a different season at each of the four locations: Rocky Peak, Elk Mountain (Sleeping Giant), Devil’s Causeway, and Finger Rock. The concept behind this piece is that these local landmarks have essentially remained unchanged for hundreds, maybe thousands, of years and these photographs might have just as easily been made by a photographer traveling through the area over one hundred years ago. These natural scenes, part of our local heritage, are burned into our collective psyche. Rusted barbed wire represents segmentation of the American West by settlers. These photographs are archival, ink jet prints, made from traditional black and white film negatives, protected from ultra violet rays with special laminating film, and mounted on genuine leather.
